| I admit, I'm addicted to The Lord of the Rings. And I did go to see the Lions for the second ROTK trailer. However, the Secondhand Lions Comedy was fabulous. It's funny and touching. It is both unreasonable and absolutely real. The best comparison I can think of is Auntie Mame with Rosalind Russell - if you enjoyed this, also tickle your fancy, but Robert Duvall and Michael Caine are two crusty old on a farm in Texas unpainted. However, they become the only stability that his great-nephew has ever known. I laughed and cried, and I'm going to buy it on DVD. Go see it, both to haul ROTK, and for his own good - he was not feel good at counting! |
| This Secondhand Lions Comedy movie was worth-seeing. The characters are well drawn and sympathetic. As well as young Walter (Haley Joel Osment) comes to know his great uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall), introduces us to this pair of "Lions for the second." Just as Walter learns to rely on these two eccentric strangers after a lifetime of lies from his mother unreliable, it allows us to learn the lessons of life in rhythm with him. There are no tricks plot, only eye-enlargement of the revelations as the story develops at a satisfactory pace. This is not a quiet little story, however. There is a rumor of a hidden fortune of which, apparently, all the relatives to travel to the vendors has heard. There is evidence that was obtained through the uncles' adventures, but also that it might be ill-gotten gains. Along with Walter, the public finds out the truth of the rumor. There are action, comedy, danger, acts of courage, rebelliousness, and the tragedy that is part of the human fragility. It is beautifully done in a way that allows older children to enjoy with their parents. You have characters with whom one can identify, no matter what their stage in life. The director skillfully weaves the past and present and still manages to preserve the confirmation of the story until the end. I do not want to say too much about this movie: Secondhand Lions or that spoil the fun of experiment and observation of it. Do not miss this film. |
| Once in a short time, a film: Secondhand Lions comes along that hits just where you live. Lions second is the film: Secondhand Lions for me. I have not enjoyed much of a film: Secondhand Lions this year. It really brought the memories of a special summer, mine was nothing like the movies, but nontheless is special and I had flashbacks as the show progressed. The writing is great and the performance is excellent. Two old pros and up-and-coming young pro turn loose and do what they obviously love to do - tell a great story. Final Oscar material here. I love it. |
| This DVD film Secondhand Lions has absolutely everything you could want: the history, outstanding performances, and entertaining in all aspects. It has humor, drama and sadness at the appropriate times, and the results without fault. Robert Duvall and Michael Caine is wonderful as the great-great uncles, and have been two of the best actors of this generation - both when they were younger, and now as seasoned performers. Haley Joel Osment is also awaiting their young charges. All the cast perform well, and one of the superior qualities of this film: Secondhand Lions is that none of the last performances provide weak, and the characters provide precisely the right amount of greed, pettiness, immaturity, or any other qualities of their parts demand. You will not find a worthier vehicle for 2 hours of entertainment in any genre. |
| For a long time I've been disgusted with most things coming out of Hollywood ... Too many films with big budgets and no imagination or talent involved. Lately Tho, the system of Hollywood has slipped a bit, and a few movies SMART people working with nonformula scripts have been falling through the cracks. And it is a refreshing breeze for those of us who do not bother with a "Weekend Wonders" monster box-office revenue they generate for two or three weeks, including the latest orgasm generator "stars" and a ton of explosives and weapons fire ... only to sink into oblivion after, as TITANIC or Pearl Harbor. The LAST intelligent Secondhand Lions film that I saw was a powerful WIND. Right on the heels, we SECOND lions. I've been a fan of Robert Duval for a long time ... There are more than a little Sonny in The Apostle, and a flavor of Colonel "Bull" Meecham of THE GREAT SANTINI thrown into the hub. He makes a tour de force working with the performance. Wonderful! The biggest surprise in all this Tho Michael Caine was having a game in Texas Redneck! It's hard to imagine the impeccable English Spitfire squadron commander of Battle of Britain could draw a crisp, the aging of Texas, but he does so beautifully. Even the accent is down very well! This is a film: Secondhand Lions that a ton of fun from beginning to end. IMHO is destined to become a classic, much like Jean Sheppard from A CHRISTMAS STORY. It is worth the trip. | (A couple of minor spoilers) I so enjoyed this movie. I loved the characters, especially those larger than life (but very sure whether it was true) Axis of nature and Garth. Duvall and Caine did some of his best works. They are absolute, but absolutely adorable rascals to do so. Osment continues to grow as a young actor and must become an actor of great success for adults (not all child stars do). That touched my heart many times, like when Jasmine comes to the aid of "their puppy." I found tears flow up to a minute and then laugh until it hurts the next (Axis sordid Stan hit with the butt of his shotgun while laying there). Even the times when you knew what was coming (Duvall kick the fillings of the 4 thugs in the shop), the results were so good that it was fun watching all this. This was a 9 out of 10 for me. We recommend that to anyone. |
